FOR OWNERS

COLUMBIA:
YOU DON'T OWN A BUSINESS.

Most business owners do not actually own a business. They own a job.

If that landed, the rest of this page is for you.

One uncomfortable question

If you disappeared for thirty days with no notice, what would specifically break? Not whether it would be hard — what would actually stop.

Write the list. That list is the size of your job and the inverse of the size of your asset. Most owners are surprised by how long it is, and more surprised by how many items on it are decisions only they are allowed to make.

Nothing on the list gets fixed by working harder. Every line is either a decision somebody else could be trusted to make, a process nobody has written down, or a relationship that belongs to you personally rather than to the business.

Coaching or consulting

ConsultingCoaching
Changes how the business worksChanges how the owner operates
Installs process, numbers, seats and systemsChanges decisions, standards, calendar and behaviour
Right when the problem is structuralRight when you know what to do and are not doing it

Buying the wrong one is the most common waste in this category. If nobody knows who owns the next step, a coach will not fix it. If you keep taking the work back onto your own desk, a new system will not fix that either.

Who should not bother

Five people should keep their money.

The owner who has already decided and is shopping for somebody to agree. The owner whose week is going to look exactly the same in ninety days regardless. The owner who wants tactics, when tactics are free everywhere and the product on offer is accountability.

The owner with no customers yet, who does not have a structure problem at all. They have a sales problem, and structure will not sell anything.

And the owner in genuine financial distress. That is an attorney and a CPA, in that order, before any conversation about operating rhythm. Coaching does not outrun a solvency problem and it is dishonest to pretend it might.

Landing on that list is not a rejection. It is a shorter route to whatever will actually help.

What is not on offer

No outcome. Not a revenue figure, not a timeline, not a transformation. Anyone in Columbia or anywhere else who attaches a number to a coaching relationship is selling something they cannot deliver.

What is available is narrower: someone who has run the business you are trying to run, who will tell you the truth about what they see, and who will check whether you did what you said. That is most of what accountability actually is.

Growth is redevelopment rather than expansion. Old industrial and institutional land inside the city is being converted to housing and offices, which pulls activity back toward the center. Growth makes an owner-dependent business worse, not better, so a market that is expanding is exactly the wrong place to postpone this.

The local version of the problem

A lot of small firms in Columbia sell to institutions rather than to consumers: contractors, staffing firms, IT shops, lobbying and consulting practices. Underneath that sits a dense independent restaurant and personal-services base, much of it Black-owned.

Institutional buyers move slowly and pay slowly, so cash flow lags revenue. Businesses that sell to the state or the university win real contracts and then spend months waiting to be paid on them.

Neighborhood associations carry real weight, churches organize a large share of civic life, and the university's calendar sets the rhythm of the whole city whether residents follow the team or not. That cuts both ways for an owner. Reputation compounds faster in a market this size, and so does the expectation that you personally will be the one who answers.

Frequently asked

Questions people actually ask

What is the difference between coaching and consulting?

Consulting installs systems in the business. Coaching changes how the operator makes decisions and spends time. Buying the wrong one is the usual waste.

Do I need to be in Columbia?

No. The Midlands is home ground, but the work is not geographic. Three interstates meet here, and the region's fixed-route bus system centers on downtown. Columbia is the one Midlands market where holding a job without owning a car is realistic rather than theoretical.

Is there a free way to start?

Yes — a free learning community and free written material. Use those first. If the free layer is not useful to you, a paid one will not rescue it.

Is this faith-based?

Ben's faith is part of his story and it shapes why he builds the way he does. Nobody is required to share it, and the material does not depend on it.

What actually happens in a coaching relationship?

A regular rhythm, honest assessment of what you are actually doing versus what you said you would do, and pressure applied to the one or two decisions that matter most this quarter. It is not a course and it is not therapy.

Make your next move

A year from now, what will you be glad you started today?

You don't need another promise that everything will be easy. You need something useful to learn — and a next step you're willing to take.
